How to use the Audio File Size Calculator

The Audio File Size Calculator works out your file size (uncompressed) in an instant. Enter duration, sample rate and bit depth and the result updates as you type — it is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser so your figures stay private.

  1. Enter the duration.
  2. Enter the sample rate.
  3. Enter the bit depth.
  4. Enter the channels.
  5. Read off your file size (uncompressed) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.

Formula

The Audio File Size Calculator uses the formula:

File size (uncompressed) = Duration × Sample rate × Bit depth × Channels ÷ 8 ÷ 1000000

Worked example

For example, with duration of 60 seconds, sample rate of 44,100 Hz, bit depth of 16 bits and channels of 2, the file size (uncompressed) is 10.58.

Inputs used
Duration 60 seconds
Sample rate 44,100 Hz
Bit depth 16 bits
Channels 2
Results

Frequently asked questions

Multiply duration × sample rate × bit depth × channels, divide by 8 for bytes, then by a million for MB. One minute of CD-quality stereo is about 10.6 MB.

CD audio is 44,100 Hz, 16-bit, 2 channels. That is the default and a common reference for uncompressed audio.

MP3, AAC and similar formats compress audio, cutting size dramatically. This calculator estimates uncompressed (WAV/PCM) size.

Yes. Doubling the sample rate or bit depth doubles the file size, since more data is stored per second.

Enter the duration. Enter the sample rate. Enter the bit depth. Enter the channels. Read off your file size (uncompressed) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
