A board foot is a volume of lumber 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long. It is the standard way to measure and price hardwood.

Multiply thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) and divide by 12. A 1 × 6 inch board, 8 ft long, is (1 × 6 × 8) ÷ 12 = 4 board feet.
