  3. Read off your download time (seconds), together with download time (minutes) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.

Formula

The Download Time Calculator uses the formula:

Download time (seconds) = File size × 8 ÷ Connection speed

Worked example

For example, with file size of 1,000 MB and connection speed of 100 Mbps, the download time (seconds) is 80.0.

Inputs used
File size 1,000 MB
Connection speed 100 Mbps
Results
Download time (seconds) 80.0
Download time (minutes) 1.33

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the file size in megabytes by 8 to get megabits, then divide by the speed in Mbps. A 1,000 MB file on a 100 Mbps line takes about 80 seconds.

File sizes are in bytes (MB) but speeds are in bits (Mbps). There are 8 bits in a byte, so the factor of 8 converts between them.

Overheads, server limits, Wi-Fi and shared connections mean you rarely get the full advertised speed, so real times are usually a bit longer.

Mbps is megabits per second; MBps is megabytes per second, which is 8 times larger. This calculator uses Mbps for the connection speed.

Enter the file size. Enter the connection speed. Read off your download time (seconds), together with download time (minutes) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
