How to use the Drag Force Calculator

The Drag Force Calculator works out your drag force in an instant. Enter fluid density, speed and drag coefficient and the result updates as you type — it is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser so your figures stay private.

  1. Enter the fluid density.
  2. Enter the speed.
  3. Enter the drag coefficient.
  4. Enter the frontal area.
  5. Read off your drag force — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.

Formula

The Drag Force Calculator uses the formula:

Drag force = 0.5 × Fluid density × Speed ^ 2 × Drag coefficient × Frontal area

Worked example

For example, with fluid density of 1.225 kg/m³, speed of 10 m/s, drag coefficient of 0.3 and frontal area of 2 m², the drag force is 36.7500.

Inputs used
Fluid density 1.225 kg/m³
Speed 10 m/s
Drag coefficient 0.3
Frontal area 2 m²
Results
Drag force 36.7500

Key terms explained

Density
Mass per unit volume, calculated as mass ÷ volume.
Force
A push or pull on an object, equal to mass × acceleration (Newton's second law).
Area
The amount of two-dimensional space a shape covers, measured in square units.

Frequently asked questions

Drag = ½ × density × speed² × drag coefficient × frontal area. At 10 m/s in air, a 2 m² body with Cd 0.3 sees about 36.75 N.

A dimensionless number for shape. Cars are about 0.25–0.35; a flat plate is near 1.0.

It scales with the square of speed, so going twice as fast gives four times the drag.

Air at sea level is about 1.225 kg/m³; water is about 1000 kg/m³ for underwater drag.

Enter the fluid density. Enter the speed. Enter the drag coefficient. Enter the frontal area. Read off your drag force — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
