Frequently asked questions

Multiply the pre-tax amount by the tax rate and divide by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the amount for the total. For example, 8% sales tax on 1,000 is 80, for a total of 1,080.

Use the rate that applies where you are buying. Rates vary by country, state and sometimes city, and some goods are taxed at reduced or zero rates. Enter your local rate for an accurate result.

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For example, with 8% tax a total of 1,080 came from 1,080 ÷ 1.08 = 1,000 before tax.

They are similar consumption taxes but applied differently. This calculator adds a single flat percentage; for India's GST with its slab rates, use the dedicated GST calculator.

Enter the amount (before tax). Enter the sales tax rate. Read off your sales tax, together with total (with tax) and amount before tax — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
