Frequently asked questions

Energy in kWh equals power in watts ÷ 1000 × hours used. Multiply the kWh by your cost per unit to get the cost. A 1000 W appliance used 5 hours a day for 30 days uses 150 kWh.

A kilowatt-hour (kWh), often called a unit on your bill, is the energy used by a 1000 W appliance running for one hour. Bills charge a rate per kWh.

It is shown on your electricity bill, usually as a per-unit or per-kWh tariff. Some areas use slab tariffs, so use your average rate for an estimate.

It is a close estimate. Real bills can include fixed charges, taxes, slab tariffs and standby power, so your actual bill may differ slightly.

Enter the appliance power. Enter the hours used per day. Enter the number of days. Enter the cost per unit (kwh). Read off your total cost, together with units consumed (kwh) and cost per day — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
