How to use the Engine Displacement Calculator

The Engine Displacement Calculator works out your displacement (cc), along with 1 related figure in an instant. Enter bore, stroke and number of cylinders and the result updates as you type — it is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser so your figures stay private.

  1. Enter the bore.
  2. Enter the stroke.
  3. Enter the number of cylinders.
  4. Read off your displacement (cc), together with displacement (litres) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.

Formula

The Engine Displacement Calculator uses the formula:

Displacement (cc) = 3.141592653589793 ÷ 4 × Bore ^ 2 × Stroke × Number of cylinders ÷ 1000

Worked example

For example, with bore of 84 mm, stroke of 90 mm and number of cylinders of 4, the displacement (cc) is 1,995.

Inputs used
Bore 84 mm
Stroke 90 mm
Number of cylinders 4
Results
Displacement (cc) 1,995
Displacement (litres) 2.00

Frequently asked questions

Displacement is π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × cylinders. An 84 mm bore, 90 mm stroke, 4-cylinder engine is about 1995 cc, or 2.0 litres.

Bore is the cylinder's diameter and stroke is how far the piston travels. Together they set the volume each cylinder displaces.

Engines are often quoted in litres for marketing. Divide cc by 1000 — so 1995 cc is about a 2.0-litre engine.

Generally larger engines can make more power, but turbocharging, tuning and efficiency mean a smaller engine can match a bigger one.

Enter the bore. Enter the stroke. Enter the number of cylinders. Read off your displacement (cc), together with displacement (litres) — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
