How to use the EV Charging Time Calculator

The EV Charging Time Calculator works out your charging time in an instant. Enter battery capacity, charger power and charging efficiency and the result updates as you type — it is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser so your figures stay private.

  1. Enter the battery capacity.
  2. Enter the charger power.
  3. Enter the charging efficiency.
  4. Read off your charging time — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.

Formula

The EV Charging Time Calculator uses the formula:

Charging time = Battery capacity ÷ (Charger power × Charging efficiency ÷ 100)

Worked example

For example, with battery capacity of 60 kWh, charger power of 7.4 kW and charging efficiency of 9%, the charging time is 9.01.

Inputs used
Battery capacity 60 kWh
Charger power 7.4 kW
Charging efficiency 9%
Results
Charging time 9.01

Frequently asked questions

Divide the battery size by the charger power, adjusted for efficiency. A 60 kWh battery on a 7.4 kW charger at 90% takes about 9 hours.

Some energy is lost as heat during charging, so the real time is a little longer than battery ÷ charger power.

A 50 kW DC fast charger fills the same battery in roughly an hour, far quicker than a home AC charger.

For daily use, charging to 80% is gentler on the battery. Charge to full only when you need the maximum range.

The EV Charging Time Calculator uses the formula: Charging time = Battery capacity ÷ (Charger power × Charging efficiency ÷ 100). For example, with battery capacity of 60 kWh, charger power of 7.4 kW and charging efficiency of 9%, the charging time is 9.01.

Enter the battery capacity. Enter the charger power. Enter the charging efficiency. Read off your charging time — the calculator updates automatically, with no button to press.
